Mc Cain feels that all women need is more education and training...

This is another reason why probably most women in the States will NOT vote for Mc Cain.

This is an advertisement on women's pay:

Mc Cain opposes equal pay law because its extra burden on the business... Well honestly, even if he thinks so he still should not have expressed it out. It had definitely pissed off most women and I'm one of them.

Women had always played an important role in a country's economy. In the past, we were house-keepers. In the modern age, there are as many women as compared to men who are taking on the leadership role. As the saying goes, ' Behind every successful man, there is a woman.' Therefore opposing equal pay law is so discriminating and it is especially so for Single mothers.

Below is a comparison on the differing policies that both Obama and Mc Cain have with regards to women and work. (Source: http://feministsforobama.com/Issues_womeneconomy.htm)

Obama/Biden

McCain/Palin

  • Opposes expanding FMLA coverage, calls it "a big government solution,"and says it should be negotiated between employers and workers.

Paid Sick Leave

  • Supports 7 days paid sick leave guarantee for workers. Currently half of all women workers have no paid sick leave.

It was removed from the ballot because of challenges to required signatures.

McCain voted against the establishment of Army's Breast Cancer Research Program

October, the Breast Cancer Awareness month once again emphasizes the importance of early screening. Breast Cancer is the 2nd most common cancer after lung cancer in the world. Despite that, Mc Cain still finds it an extreme to protect women's health and many more women's rights...which I will continue to blog about in these few days.

Got this video from youtube:

The table below shows the difference between Obama and Mc Cain's policy on Breast cancer and healthcare. (Source: http://feministsforobama.com/Issues_breastcancer.htm)

Obama/Biden

McCain/Palin

Breast Cancer Funding

  • Biden, together with Congressional majority, votes for transfer of money (for first time) from Defense Appropriation to the Army’s Breast Cancer Research Program. (1991)

Breast Cancer Funding

  • McCain votes NO on the initiation of the Army’s Breast Cancer Research Program. Opposed to using military funds for breast cancer research.
Importance: This action was the result of National Breast Cancer Coalition lobbying efforts. Feminist Majority was part of the Coalition. Until this action, breast cancer research received minimal earmarked funds although the disease was afflicting 1 in 8 women. Eventually this program resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars going to breast cancer research.

General Funding for Cancer Research

  • Obama/Biden’s plan doubles federal funding for cancer research within 5 years; increases access to clinical trials for cancer patients; and ends discrimination by insurance companies against those who previously had cancer.

General Funding for Cancer Research

  • McCain’s plan is vague in details for cancer programs. He proposes no new cancer initiatives, except for stop smoking programs.

Health Care Accessibility

  • Obama/Biden view health care as a right.

  • Plans to expand access to health insurance coverage by expanding children’s state/federal insurance program, by expanding Medicaid.

  • Plans to establish a new National Health Plan, similar to a program for members of Congress, open to everyone – no exclusion for pre-existing illnesses or conditions.

Health Care Accessibility

  • McCain/Palin view health care as individual responsibility.

  • Plans to give tax credit up to $2500 for an individual and $5000 for a family for purchase of insurance. Falls short of need. Typical family policy costs in excess of $12,000 per year.

  • Plans to tax employee for employer provided insurance benefits as income.

State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP)

  • Voted for SCHIP reauthorization, which expanded coverage to reach 3.8 million more children.

State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP)

  • McCain voted against SCHIP reauthorization. Supported Bush veto of SCHIP.

  • Rated worst Senator by Children’s Defense Action Council with a 10% rating in 2007.

John Mc Cain thinks that protecting women's health is extreme

His body language says so....McCain actually mocks protecting women's health by putting "health" in air quotes. Had wanted to blog about this after watching the last debate on 16th Oct, finally found some time today.

Original video:

Did you see that? He used "air quotes" when he mentioned women's health? This video is clearer:

If McCain is going to regret anything from that debate, it has to be his mockery on women's health to a national audience. If women in the States are still undecided, I believed they had made a choice after watching this debate. A McCain presidency would probably have to wait another 4 years.

Obama's policies on protecting a woman's right to choose, working to prevent unintended pregnancy and reducing the need for abortion, makes more sense to me. I may not agree with everything that Obama says regarding abortion but at least this man shows that he respects the health of women.

Below is a table to show the difference between Obama and Mc Cain when it comes to the issue of "Abortion and Contraception". (Source: http://feministsforobama.com/Issues_abortion.htm)

Obama/Biden

McCain/Palin

  • Supports Roe v. Wade and pro-choice judges

Family Planning & Abortion Voting Record

  • Obama has a 100% rating from NARAL and PPFA.

  • Cosponsored legislation to end discrimination by insurance companies that are allowed to exclude coverage for birth control even though they cover erectile dysfunction medication.

Birth Control Insurance Discrimination

  • McCain has ducked questions on contraceptive insurance discrimination as recently as July 2008.

  • Support and voted to fund family planning, including the Title X program.
  • Title X is only federal grant program dedicated solely to providing comprehensive family planning and related preventive health services such as access to contraceptive services, supplies and information

Yeh Siang Hui, I'm ....

...Not surprise that you were out of touch with what actually goes on in the Bank nowadays. Due to technology advancement, many of us rely on self-automated deposit machine, self-update of passbook, quick cheque deposit, etc... hence we hardly make a trip down to the Bank.

The article, 'Mistake to pay investors not satisfied to park their funds in fixed deposit account' by Yeh Siang Hui, clearly illustrates how out of touch we can be.

Firstly, anyone that goes into the Bank has an intention. Clearly, the intention is mainly either to deposit or to do withdrawal. One often see the elderly or illiterate forming long queues in the Bank because most of them do not know how to use the self-automated machine provided outside. More often than not, when you are queuing outside to draw out some cash from the ATM, once in a while you can see an elderly man or auntie coming out from the Bank with a Staff who will then lead him/ her to the quick cheque deposit box. The staff will then explained that this is how easy cheque deposit can be nowadays. Sometimes you can sense that the elderly man/ auntie does not feel very comfortabe with putting it in, they always felt that its safer for them to witness it being processed over the counter.

From incidents as such, these people are very conservative and will not go into any investment products unless they had been introduced to it or they know of such investment instrument.

In most cases, when a customer purchased an investment product, it was introduced over the counter when he/ she is making her deposit, etc. That is the first contact point. The teller whom is not qualified to give advice because she has not got the mandatory requirement of CMFAS paper qualifications, can only give factual facts about the investment product. Factual facts are facts that can be found in the brochure. Because she cannot give advice, she will normally refer the customer to the 'Relationship Manager' (RM), who has the qualifications to do so.

It was from here, the product was explained in details to the customers, but how detailed I have no idea. I agree with Yeh that 'Take the risk, bear the risk'. What if in the first place the risk was not disclosed or not explained properly? If the risk was unknown, then can we still say 'Take the risk, bear the risk'????

Was these investment products sold like Fixed Deposit?
Did the customers who bought these products understand the risk-profiling test that they will need to do? These test were conducted in English.

The word 'greedy' mentioned in the article is to me something that everyone is guilty of.

When a customer walked into the Bank to do any other thing else except to buy investment products, no greed was present. They came with a task on hand, next the teller then introduce another product to arouse their interest. The RM who is the last contact point with the customer evoke the greed in the person.

Let's look at it from another point of view. The teller who introduces the product don't just introduce to anyone. Why do I say that? People who does not have much money in their bank account will not be introduce to the product. Next the RM who is paid a basic with a high target to meet for his/ her commission pushed for the sales out of greed too. Lastly, the institution who marketed the product acted on greed too otherwise why sell these products? Why not just stick to deposits and withdrawals? The greed to earn more.

Hence, using the word 'greedy' on the investors is unfair.

Of course, there will be people who are opportunist, who will jump into the wagon to claim that he/ she had been mis-sold too in order to get compensation. On the other hand, what if there are really genuine cases where the customers were mis-sold which I believe there will be(MAS is looking into it)?

I often hear friends from the Insurance industry telling me this,

"How come the Banks can use the word guaranteed and we insurance fellows use the word, sure kenna!"

"I lose my customer to the Bank lar, they bought capital protected but our insurance ILP cannot protect capital...but capital protected is still not guaranteed!""

"I'm quite scared to sell ILP to Chinese speaking customers because I need to use the Chinese fact-find form! How to explain the jargons in Chinese?"

These comments could be made casually but it tells us something, isn't?

15-Min nap cost $200

This article, "I didn't know it was an offence"......

Mr. Kassim, you are not alone. I'm very sure majority of the Singaporeans are not aware that sleeping on park benches is an offence and this offence warrant a hefty fine of $200!

Wohohohoh! This has to be the greatest joke I had ever heard!

I really don't know what to say ... the 2 rangers, NPark, fine for taking a nap???????? What is this?

The purpose of a park is for people to rest and relax. So what's wrong with taking a nap there? If these ridiculous fines can be imposed why not imposed it on commuters who refused to give up seats for the elderly, young children as well as pregnant lady on the buses or trains.

Because of the phrase 'Misuse of facilities', very soon we may start to hear about people getting fine for:

1) Playing in school because school is a place to study not play hence misuse.
2) Waiting for a friend in a Food Court because that is a place to eat not for waiting, misuse.
3) Just soaking in the pool because a pool is meant for swimming not soaking, misuse.
4) Talking in a Karaoke Lounge because that is a place for singing not talking, misuse.
5) SMS on a hp because a phone is meant for you to talk not SMS!!!!

This is just too harsh a punishment on top of that older people tends to doze off easily. I still cannot comprehend this at all.

Indeed, we are really unique! What a FINE country!

2008 USA Presidential Debate, 16th Oct

Below is the 3rd which is also the last debate, it was a fantastic show-down!

Polling date: 4th November.

Democrats, thank you!

I cannot help but feel very charged-up and positive after reading the article below:

Going door to door in Ohio

United States Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama walked door to door in a working-class Ohio neighbourhood on Sunday, urging Democrats to vote for him and trying to win over wavering independents.

'Remember, everybody can vote right now. There is early voting in Ohio. Don't wait,' Mr Obama said as he knocked on doors, shook hands and fielded questions.

The walk down Shrewsbury Street in Holland, Ohio, was a rare foray into retail politics for the Illinois senator.

He spends the next two days in Ohio preparing for a last televised debate with Mr John McCain tomorrow. Polls there show a dead heat, with a slight lead for Mr Obama.

PHOTO: REUTERS

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why charged-up and positive?

That is exactly the way we (WP) do our ground work apart from our weekly sales of Hammer in the different wet markets in Singapore. We go door-to-door and I really mean every unit in a particular HDB flat.

It takes a lot of discipline for every team to do this on either a weekly or fortnightly basis. Walkabout as such has to be done during weekdays evening so that the probability of someone at home is higher.

Discipline is essential because all of us need to work, once a week after a hard day's work, our team will meet at the void deck of a particular block and we start making our rounds from the highest level. Sometimes the team may not be complete or at times too many. Of course its wonderful to have more people walking so that we can move faster and at the same time create more visibility. We have different teams walking on different days.

The willingness to do something like that on a voluntary basis requires lots of passion and the desire to make and see changes.

To be frank, I ever thought how are we going to complete all the flats with limited manpower and resources! Given the fact that we were not there to just greet the residents but also to engage them further. Once in while we hear feedback such as, ' We don't see the opposition around, they only appear during elections.' Remarks as such can further dampen our spirits.

But today after reading the article above, it has definitely charged me up.

If Obama can do door-to-door in a country that is so many times bigger than Singapore although its only Ohio, why can't we?

If Obama with the type of financial support and resources that he has which we don't, opted to do his campaigning this way, I'm sure it does work to a certain extent.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish the Democrats good luck and to WP comrades, our hard work will not go down the drain, continue to strive!

工人党老中青三代去吊唁

Abstracted from zaobao (3rd Oct 2008):

WP's Press Release on the Passing of JBJeyaretnam

The Workers’ Party is greatly saddened to hear of the passing of our immediate past Secretary-General, Mr Joshua Benjamin Jeyaretnam, early this morning.

Mr Jeyaretnam’s commitment and contributions to public service are well-known.

After leaving the Subordinate Court judiciary as District Judge and First Magistrate, he went into private law practice, where he represented many clients of limited means, particularly in cases of public interest.

In 1971 Mr Jeyaretnam rejuvenated the Workers’ Party by becoming its Secretary-General. He then led the Party to contest successive General Elections since 1972. In the 1981 Anson By-Election, his 6th electoral contest, the voters elected him as the sole opposition Member of Parliament, rupturing the ruling party’s total control of Parliament since Independence. He was re-elected in the 1984 General Election with an increased majority. Even though he was disqualified from office in 1986, he remained committed to the cause of democracy and empowerment of the people, contesting in the 1997 General Elections as part of the Workers’ Party team in Cheng San GRC, thereby becoming Non-Constituency Member of Parliament until 2001.

Despite the difficult political environment under which the Workers’ Party operates, and bearing the brunt of the ruling party’s attacks as the Party’s Secretary-General, he led the Party through a number of crises and assured WP’s continuance on its political path.

Throughout the decades, Mr Jeyaretnam has remained unflinching despite the many obstacles he faced and the sacrifices made by him and his family.

The Workers’ Party mourns the passing of a giant in Singapore politics and sends its deepest condolences to Mr Jeyaretnam’s family on their bereavement.
